Baroque Oriental

A journey through Mediterranean at the turn of the Baroque

Levant describes, traditionally, the Eastern Mediterranean. Numerous civilisations settled around its coasts and left their marks in lifestyle and culture. People came together on the final destination of the old trade routes like the Silk Road and the Incense Road. Venice, Rome and Istanbul developed to important business centers. Luxury tradery with spices, draperies and the brand-new coffee from the plantations of the Arabian Pensinsula flourished. Ottoman pirates terrified the area with naval raids.

Pera’s new programme transports the spirit and the Mediterranean way of life in the concert halls. Works from the late Renaissance and the rising baroque period come together with the sound of the traditional ottoman court music, forming a soul-touching collage. “Levante” is characterized by an eclectic mix of a profound knowledge of both oriental and western period performance practice and a concentrated passion for improvisation and expanding together the musical horizon.
